Legal Director
Justin Sadowsky is a civil rights litigator with nearly 20 years of experience advancing constitutional protections in U.S. federal courts. As CALDA’s full-time Legal Director, he leads the organization’s legal strategies in challenging racial discrimination, protecting immigrant rights, and defending civil liberties—specifically in support of Chinese American communities.
Justin’s career spans major national cases, including challenges to the federal terrorism watchlist, First Amendment lawsuits against anti-BDS laws, and religious freedom litigation under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA). He has successfully briefed and/or argued cases before multiple U.S. Courts of Appeal and played a key role in shaping precedent on issues like qualified immunity, religious accommodations, and government surveillance.

Justin holds a J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was a James Kent Scholar and an editor of the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law. He previously clerked for Judge Daniel M. Friedman on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and worked at leading litigation firms in Washington, D.C. His legal writing and courtroom advocacy are known for clarity, precision, and strong constitutional grounding. Justin’s leadership enhances CALDA’s capacity to pursue high-impact litigation and build lasting legal protections for Chinese Americans.
